Jonny & The Mental Breakdowns bassist Simon Turner releases his debut solo E.P. on 7th May 2021 ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (10th May) featuring contributions from members of Paul Weller, Shura and Jazz Colossus with all proceeds going to the mental health charity
mind.org.uk
A photographer and musician with a long history of depression, anxiety and an attempted suicide behind him, Simon has been behind many fundraising efforts for Mind including the very well received 2017 ‘Top Of The Punks’ compilation and numerous charity auctions, raising £8,000 to date.
This time it is a project 17 years in the making featuring contributions from his many talented friends, or ‘Associates’.
The ‘My Crisis Of Confidence’ three track E.P. is made up of reworked songs originating from demos recorded in 2003.
This was as much a cathartic act of therapy and as it was artist venture, undertaken at a time of great personal change, self analysis and of course isolation.
“The intention was always to make good on a promise I had made to myself.”
“I have watched and often helped many good friends front their own projects and have been astounded by their ability and confidence to do so. I never thought I could summon the will to do it myself. It took every ounce of confidence I could find and the love and support of my friends.”
Many of the original 2003 takes remain integral to the recording, as they could not simply not be recreated, Additional parts were recorded at home with contributions from Simons many talented friends with artwork supplied by long time friend and collaborator Ed Smith.
‘Nova Scotia’ a swirling rhythmic stomp about the how the compulsion to help often gets you taken advantage of, is arranged, produced and mixed by The Moons and Paul Weller drummer and percussionist Ben Gordelier and features the incredible brass section of 20 piece big band Jazz Colossus of Northampton.
‘Don’t Stop your Heart (From Beating)’, an indie anthem in the vein of Mercury Rev and Arcade Fire, tells the story of working your ass off, conforming to the social norms when all you dream of is shooting for the stars. Drums are courtesy of the supremely talented Ali Wilkinson of Shura, Au/Ra, Lilly Moore and Parliament. Synths come down the line from former Devotions, Wired Fang, Noir Noir and The Moons bassist / now producer, Adam Leeds in Switzerland. All other material performed, recorded and mixed by Simon.
‘Unforgettable’ is a reimagining of the classic Nat King Cole track which features a duet between Simon and the fabulous tones of Swiss singer Alex Chambovey with Adam Leeds on Bass. Again all other material written arranged performed and recorded by Simon at home during the long and tedious days of summer 2020.
The three track EP is available from Friday7th May 2021at Simon Turners and Associates band camp
